The Bonded Philosophy: Rethinking What False Lashes Should Be

Natural-looking false lashes, individual eyes and why we believe the best lash should enhance the woman wearing it - not announce itself first.

There are very few beauty products capable of changing the appearance of the face while occupying such a tiny amount of space. Eyelashes measure mere millimetres, yet change their length, direction, colour or density and the eyes can suddenly appear more open, defined, balanced or simply more awake.

It is probably why we have been fascinated by the eye area for such a remarkably long time. Long before the modern beauty industry existed, people were finding ways to emphasise their eyes. The formulations and techniques have changed enormously, but the principle behind almost all of them has remained remarkably consistent: we like to frame the eyes.

There is psychology behind that fascination too. The eye region plays an important role in how we read faces, expressions, gaze and emotion. The old expression about the eyes being the windows to the soul may be romantic rather than scientific, but perhaps it has endured because there is something inherently true about the importance we place upon them.

This is where our interest in lashes begins. Not with making them enormous, changing the person wearing them or assuming that every woman wants the same eye. We are interested in what happens when you frame an individual pair of eyes just right.

False lashes have had something of a reputation problem

Mention false eyelashes and everyone has their own mental picture. Unfortunately, it isn’t always a particularly flattering one.

For many women, the category still brings to mind something very long, very black and overly heavy; a strip of lashes that looks lovely in its box and then somehow seems to occupy half the face once applied. Others associate false lashes with messy glue, lifting corners and an application process requiring considerably more patience than they possess at 7.30 in the morning.

If you’ve tried lashes before and decided they weren’t for you, we understand why. But the problem may never have been lashes. It may simply have been the lash you were given.

A false lash can be extraordinarily subtle. Fibres can be fine enough to mimic natural hair. Length can be added by a millimetre or two rather than a centimetre. Definition can be concentrated towards the outer corner rather than covering the entire lash line. Brown fibres can replace black when softer contrast is more flattering, while individual pre-glued lash clusters allow length and definition to be positioned according to the eye rather than asking every eye to conform to one predetermined shape.

Done well, false lashes don’t have to look particularly false at all.

This is the space Bonded was created to occupy.

What makes Bonded lashes different?

Bonded specialises in natural-looking pre-glued lashes, lash clusters and outer-corner lashes designed to enhance the natural eye without the need for separate lash glue.

The convenience matters. Our pre-glued technology removes one of the most fiddly parts of wearing false lashes: applying separate adhesive, waiting for it to become tacky and then trying to position everything before it dries somewhere you didn’t intend it to.

A product can be quick without looking cheap. It can solve a very practical problem and still be beautifully made, considered and luxurious. We wanted to create lashes that happened to save time, rather than lashes you chose because you were willing to compromise in order to save time.

One of the biggest misconceptions around natural false lashes is that “natural” simply means short.

Length matters, but so do fibre thickness, taper, density, curl, flexibility, colour, placement and the visibility of the lash base. A longer, beautifully tapered fibre positioned correctly can sometimes appear considerably more natural than a shorter but very dense false lash.

It is why we have deliberately created different interpretations of natural.

Our Natural Lash is designed around ultra-fine tapered fibres and a barely-there finish, while the Natural Short takes the same philosophy into shorter 9mm and 10mm lengths for women who want very little additional length at all.

For someone who wants lift rather than an entire lash map, our Luxury Mini Wing concentrates definition at the outer third of the eye. It is available in both black and brown because sometimes changing the contrast of a lash makes as much difference as changing its length.

The Wing Xtend takes that outer-corner concept further across the eye using three pieces, while ELEVATE, created with Genevieve Turley, introduces more wispy structure and customisable volume.

They don’t exist because we believe a woman needs a wardrobe of false eyelashes. They exist because different eyes and different desired results require different solutions.

We don’t believe in a universally “best” lash

People frequently search for the best false lashes, best pre-glued lashes, best natural-looking false lashes or easiest lashes for beginners. The difficulty with the question is that “best” depends enormously on the person wearing them.

Someone with a smaller eye who wants almost imperceptible definition may have completely different requirements from someone who wants a lifted outer corner. A woman with fair colouring may prefer the softer contrast of a brunette fibre, while somebody else wants the definition of black. A complete beginner may value a one-piece wing, while an experienced lash wearer may prefer the freedom of individually mapping clusters.

Rather than beginning with Which lash is best?, we think a more useful question is:

What do you want the lash to do for your eyes?

Understanding your eye shape, natural lash length, colouring and desired finish makes choosing a lash considerably easier. It’s why education has become such an important part of Bonded and why The Bonded Diaries exists in the first place.

Eye shape is information, not a problem

We hear women describe their eyes negatively surprisingly often: too hooded, too small, too deep-set, too downturned.

We would like to change the language around that.

Hooded, almond, round, deep-set, downturned, upturned and smaller eyes aren’t problems to correct. Neither are the natural changes that happen around our eyes as we get older. They are simply characteristics that influence how makeup and lashes sit.

Understanding them gives you choices.

A particularly dense lash can overwhelm an eye with less visible lid space, whereas carefully positioned fine fibres can frame it beautifully. Shorter lengths can be transformative on smaller eyes. Outer-corner lashes can create elongation without adding unnecessary density across the entire lash line. Brown can provide definition when black feels too stark.

The objective isn’t to make every eye almond-shaped. It’s to understand the eye in front of you and work with it.

We believe ageing and beauty can exist in the same sentence without a fight

The beauty industry has a strange relationship with getting older. Women are simultaneously encouraged to remain interested in beauty while being presented with an endless list of things they should apparently be correcting.

We aren’t interested in adding to it.

Human beings age. Faces change. Eyes change. What a woman enjoys wearing may change with them, or it may not.

Some women feel considerably better at 60 than they did at 25. Some become more adventurous with beauty; others become more minimal. What often changes is discernment. You understand your own face better. You know which products earn their place in your makeup bag and which don’t.

This is particularly relevant to lashes because mature eyes don’t require a special category of “age-appropriate” beauty. They simply benefit from the same consideration we believe every eye deserves: appropriate length, weight, placement, colour and proportion.

Our job is not to tell women what they should stop wearing.

It’s to give them better options.

One of the reasons we created Bonded was to remove unnecessary complication from false lashes.

Our lashes arrive pre-glued, so there is no separate lash glue required. Depending on the style, you position the lash or cluster underneath your natural lashes, approximately 1mm from the wet line, gently push it back into the natural lashes and clamp to secure.

There is still a technique to it - and we would rather teach that technique properly than pretend there isn’t. Our Complete Beginner’s Guide to Applying Pre-Glued Lashes explains everything from how to hold your tweezers to positioning, clamping, oil, water and troubleshooting.

The right tools matter too. Our Non-Stick Tweezers are designed to help position and clamp pre-glued lashes without the bond sticking unnecessarily to the tool, while our lash bundles and sets bring together complementary products for someone starting from scratch or wanting a complete lash routine.

Convenience should make a good beauty product easier to use. It shouldn’t be the thing that excuses a mediocre result.

Who is Bonded actually for?

Bonded is for women who want false lashes without necessarily wanting to look like they’re wearing false lashes.

It is for the woman who has never managed traditional lash glue. The woman who wears lashes regularly but wants something softer. Someone with hooded or deep-set eyes who has struggled with heavy strips. Someone who wants five minutes back in the morning. Someone who has stopped wearing lashes because the styles she tried previously simply didn’t feel like her.

It is also for makeup artists who understand that enhancement doesn’t always require transformation.

And it is absolutely for the woman who loves a fuller lash. Natural doesn’t mean invisible and understated doesn’t mean boring. It means the lash has been considered in relation to the person wearing it.

The Bonded philosophy

Ultimately, our philosophy is very simple: we don’t believe a lash should change the woman wearing it. We believe it should frame her beautifully.

Sometimes that means four delicately mapped clusters. Sometimes it means a tiny brown wing at the outer corner. Sometimes it means more volume, more lift or something a little more glamorous. There isn’t one Bonded woman and there isn’t one correct way for her eyes to look.

There is simply an individual pair of eyes, a desired result and the question of how beautifully we can bring the two together.

That is the space Bonded intends to occupy: somewhere between artistry and ease, practicality and luxury, expertise and the very ordinary reality of trying to get ready in the morning.

False lashes have had a reputation problem for long enough.

We think they can be considerably better.
